Connecting K and R0

Early in this lab, we explored the concept of R_0. We now want to connect the K in our disease model to R_0. To a first approximation (meaning K only appears to the first power),

R_0 = 1 + K \left( \tau_E + \tau_I \right)

where \tau_E (tau-E) is how long you are infected, not showing symptoms, and NOT able to infect others, while \tau_I (tau-I) is how long you are infected, not showing symptoms, but able to infect others (the idea being that once you are infected, you probably don’t interact with many people and therefore don’t interact with people). The current estimate for the sum of these two parameters for COVID-19 is \tau_E + \tau_I = 5.1 \, \mathrm{days}.
