15 August 2008: Shanley, Doubt: A Parable

The quintessential off-Broadway play, this multiple prizewinner by John Patrick Shanley could be done in any school auditorium or even in somebody’s garage. It was extremely well cast and well acted, with Nancy E. Carroll in the pivotal, crucial role of Sister Aloysius Beauvier. Fascinating to watch, and productive of much conversation and thought afterwards. Gloucester Stage is still alive and well in its first season after Israel Horovitz retired from the artistic directorship. Eric C. Engel, the new artistic director, also directed the play, clearly and transparently.
