January 14, 1986: Congreve, Love for Love

National Theatre, Lyttelton

A very fine, spirited production, nicely paced and timed, room for good characterization with no detriment to speed and clarity of action. I felt a little out of it, to tell the truth, after my whirlwind trip to Glasgow to speak with members of their Department of Theatre and back on Monday (back on the sleeper, arriving early Tuesday morning), and I didn’t sleep well at all Sunday night. So I was a little spaced out and not very alert.
